Bitwise Controls

Remote Project Updates

Change is good!

The entire team at Bitwise Controls has been involved in the Custom AV and Systems Integration industry for years. From our days as installers, programmers, and business owners, we understand that even after a successful installation, sometimes changes need to be made down the road. Maybe the cable provider switched channel numbers (again) and you need to change your client's favorite channel macros. Or maybe the client has requested an aesthetic change to their GUI interface.

With the release of version 1.6 of our Project Editor software and BitWise Touch app for iOS, installers no longer need to roll a truck to make simple programming changes.

How does it work?

It's pretty easy. The installer simply makes the necessary changes to the project file from the shop, at home, basically anywhere with an internet connection. The new "Export Project Bundle" function allows the installer to compile and upload the entire project, including all controller settings, macros, and GUI Groups, to our servers. Once the file is uploaded to our servers, an email is sent to the client containing a special link to the bundle file, as well as any special notes or instructions the installer may wish to include. Once the client clicks the link on their iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch, the bundle file will open up in our BitWise Touch app, and a clean and simple wizard-style interface will walk them through the process of transferring programming changes to the controllers, and/or selecting the updated GUI pages to be used on that device.

It's fast, easy, and it doesn't require any complicated network setup or port forwarding.

Does that mean that BitWise is now 'Cloud' based?

'The Cloud' is really just a marketing buzzword that means "stuff that happens on web servers". So yes, our new remote update functionality is Cloud-based, but we prefer to simply refer to it as a web service. We'll be rolling out some more fantastic web services in the coming weeks and months, but let's not get off track.

Our new remote updating web service is great for remotely making changes after a project has been completed. But there are a number of reasons why fully 'Cloud based' programming software is not such a great fit for custom install professionals.

  • It REQUIRES an internet connection: Many installations (especially new-construction) take place BEFORE internet service has been installed on-site. If your programming software lives in "The Cloud", you're not going to be getting much done without internet service.
  • It's not very efficient: Why rely on a connection to web server, which is subject to all kinds of connectivity issues, when the system you are programming is located right there on the local network with you?

  • We feel that our approach offers the best of both worlds: local connectivity while you are on-site, and a fast, simple procedure for remote updates when you're not.
